Tire Fire - Pajarito Mesa

County fire crews are putting the last bursts of water on a large tire fire that sparked Thursday morning on the Pajarito Mesa. The fire is estimated to have burned between 1,000 and 1,500 tires, which a property owner had used as a fence. Crews arrived at the blaze around 7 a.m., said Bernalillo County Fire Department division chief Chris Gober. The fire broke out about about a mile and a half west of the county jail. Crews had to navigate unfinished roads to get there and haul their own water, which added a bit of a delay in getting the fire under control, he said. There are no structures threatened, Gober said. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Gober said crews will be out the majority of today to prevent flare-ups and to figure out how the fire ignited.
